Businessman. Well-known St. Louis tobacconist and founder of the Peter Hauptmann & Company. After coming to the United States from his native Germany, Mr. Hauptmann worked for various wholesale firms. He then started the firm of Peter Hauptmann & Co. He purchased the steamer City of Alma, and acting in the capacity of her captain, traded at the various river points between St. Louis & Memphis. While still continuing the business of his tobacco firm, he supervised the building of the steamers Cherokee and Fred Herold at Dubuque, Iowa. He formed a partnership in the steamboat business with Mr. Herold, but later sold out his interests to his partner. He was also the General Manager of the Cherokee Packet Company. After retiring, he took a great interest in all matters relating to the city of St. Louis.
