Caleb W. Mitchell, 79, long-time city official, died suddenly this morning at 10:45 at his home, 81 State. He had just returned from a trip downtown. Several weeks ago Mr. Mitchell fractured ribs in a fall and had been confined to the Saratoga Hospital for two weeks.
Born in Troy Aug. 24, 1875, Mr. Mitchell had been a resident of Saratoga Springs for many years. He served as charity investigator in the Department of Public Safety and later as license inspector in the Department of Accounts. Representatives of the city departments honored him at a dinner when he retired from the latter post in 1949. His father had served as village president. Recently Mr. Mitchell had been an attendant at the National Museum of Racing.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. John J. Ponzer and Mrs. Robert Rodgers, Albany, and Mrs. Robert Saunders, Saratoga Springs; two sons, William L. and Robert T. Mitchell, Saratoga Springs, and several grandchildren. Arrangements for the funeral in charge of the Burke Funeral Home are incomplete.
