Ellen was the fourth of six children born to James Nolan (1800-1873) and Catherine Nolan, née McNertney (1809-1883.) Both parents were born in Ireland, were married there, and immigrated to Canada about 1830. They settled in Peterborough Ontario, where five children were born. Sometime from 1840 to 1842, they moved to Wellesley Township, Waterloo County, Ontario.

On May 29, 1859, Ellen married Frederick Nolan in Berlin (now Kitchener), Ontario. The couple lived in Berlin, where they had six children:
- Mary Ann (1860-1940)
- James Alexander (1861-1939)
- Margaret E. (1863-1943)
- Robert Nelson (1865-1943)
- Frederick Augustus (1868-1931)
- Samuel Whitney (1868-1948)

(The birth and death years given above are those shown on the respective gravestones. However, calculated birth years using age information from Canada and United States censuses vary--for example, calculated birth years for Frederick are 1865, 1867, and 1868, and for Samuel, 1868 and 1872. As well, a death record for Frederick suggests that he was born in 1867. )

Ellen died on February 1, 1868. She was 30 years old.Additional information provided by Meg (47885824).
