Philosopher. Ludwig Feuerbach was a 19th-century German philosopher, who abandoned his theological studies to study under Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel in Berlin but then became an advocate of Baruch Spinoza's views about nature, arguing against the relevance of Christianity. In his most important work, "The Essence of Christianity," in 1841, he attempts to rationalize religion, maintaining that God is a projection of the various aspects of man's nature. A moralist, he is remembered for his influence on Karl Marx and for his humanistic theologizing. He denied that he was an atheist. Feuerbach's criticism of orthodox religion made him a reluctant hero of the political radicals of 1848, and he withdrew to scientific study, supported financially by friends after the failure of his wife's porcelain business. Besides "The Essence of Christianity," he published "God, Freedom, and Immortality" in 1866 and "Theogonie" in 1857.
