Upon completion of Active Duty, Lenny transitioned in to the Naval Reserve where he continued to serve for an additional 17 years, retiring in 1983 at the rank of Commander. Simultaneously while serving his country as a citizen sailor, Lenny pursued a valuable 35 year career as a civil servant. Lenny initially worked for the Department of Commerce as a Senior Economist in the Balance and Payments Division. In 1973, he began a 25 year career with the Department of Defense at the Pentagon. He served as the key advisor on budget issues for nine Secretaries of Defense and nine Department Comptrollers. He retired as Director of Plans and Systems in 1998.
Lenny was preceded in death by his loving parents and his four brothers, Ray, Fred, Gene, and Frankie. Lenny is survived by his wife of 56 years, Lois Dotson Campbell, two devoted daughters, Lisa Ann Campbell of Alexandria and Kristin Campbell Baldwin of Springfield, his son in law, Matthew Baldwin, 3 wonderful grandchildren, Charlee, Lilly, and Nate, two sisters in law, Phyllis Dietz (Bill) and Patricia Stunkard, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Lenny was a kind and gentle man who was well liked and respected by all who knew him. He was known for his generous spirit and sense of humor. Lenny and his family lived in the Seminary Ridge Community for 47 years and was affectionately called “Mr. Lenny” and “Mayor of Fort Worth Avenue” by his long time neighbors and friends. Lenny loved gardening and kept Home Depot and Miracle Grow in business. He loved traveling, especially cruising with his family. He loved sports and was an avid Nats fan and a passionate follower of UVA basketball. Above all, he loved his family and cherished every minute spent with them.
