"COVINAN 57 YEARS DIES.
COVINA, Feb. 12. Funeral services were to be held at 2 p. m. today for Mrs. Sarah D. Souther, 79, whose death after several years of failing health removed another Covina pioneer. She became seriously ill a week ago and was removed to the home of her son, Everett, in Bell Gardens where she died Thursday afternoon [February 8].

Services were to be conducted from the Christiansen and Moore mortuary with the Rev. Victor Hayman and the Rev. W. W. Catherwood, former Covina Baptist pastors, officiating. Interment was to follow in the family plot in Oakdale cemetery [in Glendora].

In 1883, in company with her brother, Charles Cantonwine, Mrs. Souther left her birthplace at Sheldon, Iowa, and came to Covina where the two established a home. A short time after coming here, the brother and sister built a cottage on E. College street and a year later the sister was married to Lucian [Lucien] H[uff] Souther.

Mrs. Souther bought her brother's Interest in the property and this has been the Souther family home for a period of 65 years At the time of her death, Mrs. Souther owned a ten-acre orange grove on E. Howland avenue, which was set out by her late husband about sixty years ago.

When the Covina Orange Growers association was organized 40 years ago Mr. Souther was one of the original stockholders. He passed away 18 years ago. Besides her son, Everett, Mrs. Souther leaves a brother, Albert Cantonwine of Covina. Another son, Cecil, passed away about eight years ago."Sally/Sallie (aka Sarah) Cantonwine Souther was the daughter of Abraham and Elizabeth (White) Cantonwine and the granddaughter of Charles and Mary Magdalena (Scholl) Cantonwine.

Charles, the patriarch of the Cantonwine family, immigrated to America from Prussia in 1806, arriving in Philadelphia, Penn., aboard the ship Orlando. The ship's passenger list shows "Chr. Kuntentwine, single man." The name Kuntentwine later evolved to Cantonwine, and Charles appears to be the only surnamed Kuntentwine/Cantonwine to immigrate to America. Eight or so years after his arrival in Philadelphia, in about 1814, Charles married Mary Magdalena Scholl, daughter of Charles Jacob & Margaret (Fuhr) Scholl, in Bedford county, Pennsylvania.

On January 16, 1895 in Los Angeles Co., CA, Sally married Lucien Souther. By 1920, Sally and Lucien had two sons, Everett and Cecil. Nothing more is known about the family except Sally's death in Los Angeles in 1940.
