Martha G. Miller Powell
September 17, 1939 - April 16, 2020

Mrs. Martha G. Miller Powell, age 80 of Stockbridge passed away April 16, 2020. She was a retired Customer Service Representative with Sun Trust Bank and a member of Crossroads Baptist Church. Martha went by many names…Mama, Grace, Granny, Ga Ga, Sis, Mott, and Martha. She loved Mama the most as it was her most cherished role in life. She was loved by so many and will be missed by so many. She was quiet and shy but yet very giving and always concerned for others. She enjoyed her career at SunTrust Bank in Atlanta and even learned to ride Marta to and from work (which was a feat considering she was hesitant of trying new things on her own). She enjoyed spending time with family more than anything in life and was devoted to you once you became a friend. As a child she spent summers and as much time as she could in Kentucky with loving family that she adored. Once she was grown and had children, she enjoyed watching her kids play ball and she spent many years at baseball, football, and softball fields supporting her children and was very active as a team mother during all those years. Once grandchildren came along, she enjoyed having them stay over for sleepovers, shopping for them, and she just thought they hung the moon. She enjoyed traveling to Florida Beaches, watching Nascar Races, and going on girl trips with her daughter and most especially trips back to Kentucky to see her family. She enjoyed cooking for family especially during the holidays. She loved sending cards to people when they were sick or needed encouragement and was so faithful for many years sending Birthday cards to family and friends. She was a faithful caregiver to her mother in the later years of her mom’s life. She learned to use a computer and tablet and mastered Face book, Googling, etc. She loved watching Dancing with the Stars, American Idol, and late night country and gospel music shows while talking with her sister on the phone. Although in her later years when her health began to fail, she never said Why Me? She stayed positive and upbeat when most people would have given up…she proved to be so much tougher during her fight to the end. She is now resting in Heaven alongside her Son, Mother, Sister, and many others with no more pain and suffering, but she will be missed by many left behind. Mrs. Powell was preceded in death by her mother: Evelyn Newkirk, father: Coy Miller, son: Michael Maddox, sister: Jerrie Burger and brother-in-law: James Woodruff. She is survived by her daughter: Renee Bennett and husband Gene of Jonesboro, sister: Patricia Woodruff of Hampton, grandchildren: Felicia Maddox (Steven Smith), Tiffany Maddox, Christopher Bennett (Abbie), Jennifer Thomas (Phillip), great-grandchildren: MaryAnn Bennett, Carolina Bennett, Taylor Thomas and Andrew Thomas, great great-grandchild: Asher Bennett, several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. A Private Graveside Service will be held at Fairview Memorial Gardens. A celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to Southern Grace Hospice, 80 Candler Road McDonough, Georgia 30253 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, www.stjude.org Ford-Stewart Funeral Home, Inc., Jonesboro/Stockbridge 770-210-2700. www.fordstewartfuneralhome.com.
