1st Duke of Buckingham. Friend of Dryden and Pope. Fell form grace when he plotted for the return of the Stuarts in the reign of Queen Anne. Built Buckingham House - on the site of which is now Buckingham Palace - and died there. His epitaph has been translated thus: 'I lived doubtful but not dissolute: I died unresolved, not unresigned. Ignorance and error are incident to human nature: I trust in an Almighty and all-good God. Oh thou Being of Beings, have compassion on me!'
