Culloden, GA- On the evening of Wednesday, September 7, 2016, Denver Dukes went to be with the Lord in heaven. He was 96.
Denver was born on January 9, 1920 in Carroll County, Georgia to the late John Harris and Hester Williams Dukes. Of the Catholic faith, he was raised in Newnan, Georgia and proudly served his country in the United States Army during World War II as a hospital administrator for the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH). Mr. Dukes toured in Australia, the South Pacific, China, Burma, and India during his military career.
Subsequent to his career in the Army, he went on to graduate from New York University and continued to live in New York for 50 years. Denver enjoyed a successful career with National Elevator Industries, Inc. representing elevator manufacturers across the U.S. In his retirement years, he enjoyed travel, playing his piano, listening to music and doting on his cat Tiger. He also published Living Life on a Full Note While Reaching for the Grace Notes: Denver A. Dukes, A Memoir.
Denver's memory will forever be treasured by his loving nephew, Lenn Dukes (Sherrie) of Culloden; nieces, Vickie Gilly of Warner Robins, Nancy Brown (Tom) of Wisconsin, Gail Elmore of North Carolina, June Nesbitt (Dave) of Gainesville, Janet Keller (Alan) of Canton, and Jennifer McCollom of North Carolina; and sister-in-law, Ina Dukes of Blue Ridge.
Visitation will be Thursday, September 15th, from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. with memorial services immediately following at Antioch Baptist Church, 2093 Thomaston Hwy, Butler, Georgia.
