Helen was born on May 11, 1914, in Smithfield, to Lucy and John Morris, oldest of four children. She grew up and lived nearly 85 years in Fairmont, WV where she married Raymond Yates and raised two daughters.
The last several years, she resided at Berkley Village in Newport News, Va., near her family.
In her younger years, Helen was employed with the Water Department, City of Fairmont,WV as a bookkeeper.
She was a member of Christ United Methodist Church in Fairmont, the Woman's Club, the Hampton Roads Doll Club and attended Noland United Methodist Church, where she loved the Ladies Bible Class.
Helen had a quick mind, a good sense of humor and loved cooking, antiques (especially dolls) and flower gardening in her younger days.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Shirley Donihue; two brothers, John and Ralph Franklin; and sister, Bernadine.
Left to cherish her memory is her beloved daughter, Nancy Yates Vincent and husband "Bud" of Newport News, Va.; three grandchildren, Brad Vincent and wife Lisa, David Vincent and wife Stacy, all of Newport News, Va., and Steven Hanisch of Punta Gorda, Fla.; three great-grandchildren, Tyler Merrick Vincent, Alexis Hailey Vincent and Gwendolyn Hanisc; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Peninsula Funeral Home in Newport News, Va. A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in Beverly Hills Memorial Gardens, Westover, WV
