Mr. Cookson joined Company A, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Division on 6 Jun 1944 in Rome, Italy. He participated in the Invasion of Southern France and landed with his unit at Cavalaire Bay, France on 15 Aug 1944. During the Colmar Pocket Campaign, he earned a Bronze Star Medal near Bennwihr, France on 26 Dec 1944. He was seriously wounded in action near Rimschweiler, Germany on 19 Mar 1945 during the breaching of the Siegfried Line in that area. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal.
