LEMON GROVE — Twin sisters shot to death Wednesday in their Lemon Grove home, allegedly by their mother’s ex-boyfriend, were remembered as high school athletes who were “always smiling and always happy.”
Family and friends said the girls — identified as Caira and Leah Christopher, 15 — were sophomores at Helix Charter High School in La Mesa. The county Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed their identities.
“The twins were so loved, always smiling and always happy,” their godsister, Mariah Drayton, 26, said Thursday in a brief interview. “Always got good grades.”
Also Thursday, sheriff’s investigators identified the suspect arrested in the shooting as 38-year-old Dwayne Edward Groves Jr., a former boyfriend of the girls’ mother.
The woman’s 23-year-old son was also wounded in the shooting but survived.
Groves was booked into jail on suspicion of murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon in connection with the shooting at the home on Central Avenue.
A Helix Charter High School official sent a note to parents and guardians, informing them of the deaths and alerting them to counseling services and other support made available.
