Roy was born in Doon, Ontario on August 4, 1897, to Dilman and Cora Louisa
(Lutz) Wildfang and had six siblings: Ethel, Ella, Norman, Clarence, William, and
Lucy. World War I had been underway for three years and Canada did not have
enough recruits to reinforce the Canadian Expeditionary Force. Roy received a
directive from the Canadian Government that he was drafted under the Military
Service Act 1917 and to appear at the 1st Depot in Kitchener on November 5, 1917.
He was accepted and proceeded to basic training. He embarked from Canada on
February 21, 1918, and arrived in England on March 4, 1918. He was posted to
18th Battalion Canadian Infantry and shipped to France on August 18, 1918. The
end of the war was in sight and the Canadian Forces were starting to demobilize.
Roy was shipped back to England and then on to Canada where he was discharged
on May 24, 1919. Roy and Alma Clara Catherine (Dotzert), sister of WWI veteran
Clayton Dotzert, raised three children: Elaine Marjory, Gerald Roy and Jeanne
Marie. He was employed at Valentine Martin/Greb Shoes. Roy died in 1967 and
is buried in Memory Gardens, Breslau, Ontario.
