David Clinton Allen
May 30, 1933-April 15, 2020

Beloved Father, Grandfather, Great-Grandfather, Husband, and Retired Pana Educator, David “Dave” Clinton Allen, 86, passed away Wednesday, April 15, 2020 at Heritage Health, Pana. He was born May 30, 1933 in Decatur, Illinois to the late Daniel Bigler Allen & Louise (Clinton) Allen. He married Phyllis Ruth Eagan on August 16, 1959 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pana. She preceded him in death on September 12, 2008.

Dave grew up in Decatur, Illinois having attended Decatur High School graduating in 1951. He was also a proud graduate of both Millikin University and Eastern Illinois University. He completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Education at Millikin University in 1958 and a Master’s Degree in English from EIU in 1963. Dave was also a United States Army Veteran, serving his country during the Korean War era. He was stationed in Germany. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal (Germany). One of his favorite stories to tell is how he received a phone call while a student at Millikin that a small town, south on Route 51 called “Pana” needed a teacher. He decided to make that his first professional teaching assignment and he never looked back. He spent over 30 years educating the students of Pana at both the elementary and high school levels. He would also cite his decision to move to Pana, the catalyst that led to him “meeting the love of his life, Phyllis Ruth Eagan.” The couple were married in 1959 and enjoyed their lives raising a daughter, working, worshiping, and living in Pana their entire lives. In addition to being a teacher for the Pana School District, Dave also worked weekends and summers with his wife at Tanner Drive-In and the Roseland Theatre in Pana for many years. He was a member and former Elder at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pana. He enjoyed traveling, country music shows, attending Pana Panther sporting events, watching the Fighting Illini and St. Louis Cardinals, attending events involving his grandchildren, and telling stories about his life, military service, and education. “Mr. Allen” was well known in the Pana community for being an amazing and caring teacher and his absolutely genuine and generous nature. He was kind to every single person he met.

Dave is survived by his daughter and son-in-law: Suzanne Marie “Sue” Davis and Terry W. Davis of Pana. Grandchild: Valerie Ann Davis Lynch, great-grandchildren: Ross Andrew Lynch and Grant Allen Lynch, all of Pana. His sister, Mary Louise Allen Goe, of Cupertino, California also survives. Dave has two nephews and one niece who survive. He was preceded in death by his wife and parents listed above. His brother, Larry Allen, also preceded him. Dave and his wife had a close relationship with their grandson, Justin Andrew Davis, who passed away in 2010.

Due to limitations caused by the current Pandemic, Dave will be buried alongside his wife in Linwood Cemetery (Pana, IL) during a private ceremony for the immediate family on Monday, April 20, 2020. Christian and military burial rites by the Pana Veterans Honor Guard will be accorded. Pastor Terry O’Brien of St. Paul Lutheran Church of Pana will officiate the private burial ceremony. A celebration of life service for family and friends will be planned for a later date in accordance with public health guidelines. In line with Dave’s lifelong commitment to education and his passion for the Pana Football program, memorials in Dave’s honor may be made to the Pana Quarterback Club or the Pana Education Foundation and will be accepted by McCracken-Dean Funeral Home who is assisting the family.
