Jon D. Allen March 26, 1945 – April 10, 2020
Jon David Allen, 75, passed from this life on Good Friday, April 10, 2020, at home in Fort Smith, Arkansas. Jon was a Christian and faithful member of Rye Hill Baptist Church and the Glorybound Sunday School Class. Jon loved it there.

Jon was born March 26, 1945, in Joplin, Missouri to James and Myrtle Allen, the youngest of three children. Jon graduated Webb City High School in 1963, and joined a host of classmates serving in the military, as did his brother and several uncles. Jon served in the US Navy. He was proud that his two sons followed in his footsteps of military service.

Jon and Sharon (Michel) were married on July 4, 1965 in Branson, Missouri. Together they raised three children, Mark, Paul, and Tiffany. Upon Jon's honorable discharge in 1967, with Sharon and son, Mark, they moved from Newport Naval Station, Rhode Island to Springfield, Missouri, where he started working for Zenith Corporation. Soon after, American Telephone & Telegraph Company hired him. He began as an AT&T Long Lines Technician in Springfield, Missouri, then Branson, adding children Paul and Tiffany. At Branson they skied, swam, and fished Table Rock Lake almost all the time. AT&T transferred Jon and family to Fort Smith, Arkansas; they built a new home in 1971 in the Burnville Community and joined First Baptist Church in Greenwood, where Jon would serve as a Deacon many years. The 'Allen Ranch' raised cattle, chickens, turkeys, pigs, horses, ducks and fish in the pond, hay in the pastures, and Rasputin the goat! After a couple company moves, Jon retired from AT&T after 28 years of service.

The Greenwood FBC Church Youth & Choir would be the center of his life. He and Sharon, along with several families, traveled all over the county as the Youth Choir performed concerts. Their "other kids" remain close to this day.

Jon was an avid hunter of turkey and deer. He mentored several young men in the finer points of the sport and loved the thrill of calling and tracking those wild turkeys! He once recorded the 'triple trophy' for deer hunting. Oh, the stories!

Jon lived in Granby, Missouri for a few years where he carved out a beautiful homestead of 20 acres and built a great house. While there, he also raised cattle. He and best friend from elementary school, Bill Demery, raised emus. They were going to be big breeders at the Ridge Runner Emu Ranch they created, raising emus from the egg to adult – and it worked with lots of hard work. But they found it much easier to stick to cattle. But, a few of the emu were fine eatin'.

Now retired, Jon and Sharon could really enjoy their children grow and start families of their own. He was most proud to be a Grandfather, Paul brought him Zane and Chase, Tiffany brought Tanner, Hayden, and Carter. Jon took great delight bragging on those Boys! He relished saying one was his favorite any time they weren't all together and just smiled and smiled. Each child and grandchild gave him reason to be proud and to worry a little – but he loved them tremendously.

Jon's friends were always warmly greeted with that big ole friendly smile and a handshake. He enjoyed being surrounded by these life-long friends to laugh and joke, hunt and fish, and help often. Jon was reliable and steady over the years.

Jon remained close with many high school buddies and those from Branson. Several of them still gather annually for fishing and reminisce about the good old days, and compare stories, or make up new old ones. These relationships were all special to Jon. Thanks to so many calls and reminders of the great times!

Jon was diagnosed with pulmonary fibrosis, eventually in 2018. This lung debilitating disease began to slow his rich life. Service on the Navy vessels caught up to him. Jon was a 100% disabled Veteran, but proud to have served!

Jon has joined his heavenly family and is survived by his loving wife, Sharon, his children Mark and wife, Ronda in Fort Smith, Tiffany and husband, Jarrell Woodhull in Greenwood. They lost middle child, Paul 'Rink', tragically in 2018. Jon's pride and joy were his five grandsons, from Paul are Zane and fiancé, Ashley and Chase and wife, Kelsey, from Tiffany are Tanner, Hayden and wife, Karly and Carter. Jon is also survived by his brother, James Allen and wife, Diane in Florida, his nephews, Dewayne and Stephen and wife, Bethi; Jon's sister, Patricia Byler-Morey in Texas, and the Byler Boys, his nephews, Curtis, Todd and wife, Edna and Jason and fiancé, Kim also in Texas. The boys all loved Uncle Jon.

The family will have a private service on Thursday, April 16 at Rye Hill Baptist Church, officiating will be Pastor Michael Franklin and staff. Viewing will be Wednesday at McConnell Funeral Home in Greenwood from 1 – 6 p.m. Jon's earthly body will be laid to rest in the Fort Smith National Cemetery on Friday.

In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to Rye Hill Baptist Church, 11512 Old Hwy 71 South, Fort Smith, AR 72916.
