Wayne and the former Miss Clara Louise Howton were united in marriage on July 24, 1953, and they cherished 65 years together prior to Mrs. Stephens’ passing in 2019. Wayne proudly served his country in the United States Army as an engineer where he learned to operate a bulldozer. Upon his return home, Wayne continued to work as a bulldozer operator, and cleared many acres of farm land and built many lakes in Cross County and surrounding areas. Wayne “semi-retired” to the Arkansas Department of Transportation, where he worked for several years. Wayne was a member of the American Legion, and enjoyed tending to his yard and home, and reading. Mr. Stephens was a member of Cherry Valley Baptist Church.
Mr. Stephens was preceded in death by his wife, Clara Stephens; his father, Herman Stephens; mother and stepfather, Bessie and G.W. Owens; two brothers, Archie and Walter Stephens; a sister, Polly Hall; and a great-grandson, Bailey Stockton Barton.
He is survived by a son, Gary Stephens and wife, Susan, of Cherry Valley; a daughter, Sherry Stephens-Barton and husband, Jim, of Gentry; a sister, Mabel Montgomery of Oregon; seven grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services will be conducted privately with interment in Crosslawn Cemetery under the direction of Thompson-Wilson Funeral Home of Wynne
