Prominent German resident of Springfield. Born in Hanover, Germany, he spent several years of his early life in the German army. He came to America in 1865, landing in New York, and then came to Springfield, arriving in Jan. 1866. He first learned the trade of cigar making. He was editor of The Staats Wochenblatt, the first German newspaper of Sangamon county, which began publication on Dec. 21, 1881. Three years later he sold the paper, spent a year in Pierre, S. D. and then returned to Springfield where he again edited the paper which he had bought back.

He married Mrs. Anna Ahrens on Feb. 25, 1868 in Lincoln. He was a member of the Odd Fellows, the Maccabees, the Turn Verein and the German Mannerchor. He was survived by his wife, son A. H., and daughter Mrs. Robert Miller. IL State Journal, Springfield, IL, 11-23-1911
