Major League Baseball Manager. He is remembered for guiding the Kansas City Royals to their first American League Pennant (1980) and later leading the Chicago Cubs to their first post season berth in 39 years (1984). Born James Gottfried Frey, he was raised in Cincinnati where he made his initial mark on the baseball diamond during his years at Western Hills High School. He enrolled at Ohio State University prior to beginning his fourteen year career in the Minor Leagues. In 1965, Frey began his managerial career in the Baltimore Orioles' organization and later served as a scout. He succeeded Whitey Herzog as manager of the Kansas City Royals (1980 to 1981) and in 1980, he guided them to a 97 win, 65 loss record and their capturing of the American League Championship over the New York Yankees. The Royals would lose the World Series to the Philadelphia Phillies. He served on the New York Mets' coaching staff, prior to being hired as the Chicago Cubs' manager (1984 to 1986) and guided them to a 96 win, 65 loss record and the National League East Division Title in 1984, for which he received NL Manager of the Year honors. This feat ended a 39 year drought which last saw the Cubs reaching the postseason in 1945, when they lost to the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. He went on to the Cubs' front office where he served as their general manager from 1987 until 1991.
