Betty Jean Smith Chambers, formerly of Benoit, MS passed away Monday, April 13th, 2020. She was a resident of Yalobusha County Nursing Home. A Memorial Service will be held on a later date.
Betty was born in Leflore County, MS to Mr. James William Smith and Mrs. Gladys Robinson Smith on December 29, 1934. She graduated from Minter City High School. She worked in bookkeeping most of her life. Her last employment was with the Bolivar County School District, where she served as Title One Clerk. She loved the outdoors and often spent time hunting and fishing with her husband of 54 years, Harold Loyd. She was a faithful member of Benoit Union Church, where she was a part of the Baptist fellowship. She lovingly served others in her community in many ways, mainly through her wonderful cooking. Her greatest loves were her God, her husband and family.
She is preceded in passing by her first husband, Maurice D. McDowell, her parents, James William Smith and Gladys Robinson Smith, her late husband, Harold Loyd Chambers, Sr., and her sister, Mavis Smith Mims.
Betty is survived by her children, Billy Reece McDowell (Leigh) of Benoit, MS; Melanie Tackett (Tim) of Oxford, MS; Harold Loyd Chambers, Jr. (Lisa) of Greenville, MS; grandchildren, Richard Loyd McDowell (Diana) of Cleveland MS; Timothy Paul Tackett, Jr. (Jessica) of Memphis, TN; Daniel William Douglas Tackett of Memphis TN; Benjamin Christopher Tackett of Nashville TN; Lauren Elizabeth Chambers (Chris Cooper) of Jackson MS; Sara Beth Reynolds (Parker) of Cleveland; great-grandchildren, Chambers Montgomery Tackett of Memphis, TN; McDaniel Jennings Tackett of Memphis, TN; Liam Ander Reynolds of Cleveland, MS; Baby Girl Reynolds (on the way) Cleveland, MS; siblings, James Everett Smith (Lib) of Benoit, MS; Joyce Smith Skelton of Arkabutla, MS; Aubrey D.
