He is most widely recognized as the voice of Brainy Smurf in Hanna-Barbera's The Smurfs (1981–1989) and as the inquisitive medical student in the opening scene of Young Frankenstein (1974). He graduated from Far Rockaway High School in Queens, New York City, New York, in 1957. He attended and graduated from nearby Columbia University in Manhattan, New York City, in 1961. He died at his home Easter Sunday night in front of friends and family while in hospice after suffering a couple of strokes around New Years. Married Mary Gillis in 2001.
