A memorial service for John Edwin Seeborg of McMinnville will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday in the First Presbyterian Church, McMinnville, with the Rev. Karen Renner and the Rev. Jack Hodges officiating. Private entombment will be in Willamette National Columbarium, Portland.

Mr. Seeborg died of cancer Nov. 10, 2002, in his home. He was 84.

He was born Jan. 12, 1918, in Kelso, Wash., the son of Victor Ferdinand and Fanny Elvira Reinikka Seeborg. He was raised and educated in Astoria and graduated from Astoria High School in 1936.

He served in the Army for two years in Schoffield Barracks, Hawaii. He belonged to the pistol team and received special recognition for expert marksmanship. After completing his first tour of military service, he worked in Portland and Astoria.

He re-enlisted in the Army in 1941, serving as a chief warrant officer in the Army Air Forces in World War II.

He and Jane Faircloth were married Aug. 30, 1942, in Miami. He lived in Florida after the war until 1953, then moved back to Astoria.

Mr. Seeborg had lived in McMinnville since 1962. He was a State Farm Insurance agent in McMinnville for about 25 years, retiring in 1986. He was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church, Kiwanis Club and Michelbook Country Club, all in McMinnville.

He was an avid supporter of McMinnville High School basketball and Linfield College athletics. He loved traveling with his wife, music and playing golf and bridge.

Family members said he was very devoted to his family, community, church and country.

Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Kirsten Seeborg of Lake Oswego and Suzanne Abram of Klamath Falls; two brothers, Arnold Seeborg of Astoria and Edward Seeborg of Sandy, Utah; three sisters, Lora Thompson of Cannon Beach, Judith Walker of Estacada and June Christensen of Eugene; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by six brothers, V. William Seeborg, Hugo Henry Seeborg, Arvid Seeborg, Kenneth Seeborg, Roy Seeborg and Hugo Seeborg (in infancy); and four sisters, Hannah Seeborg, Helma "Mike" Jeffers, Helen Blomquist and Barbara Seeborg.
