Nathaniel Bray was born in Ontario County, New York, June 8, 1827, and died at Syracuse, Neb., July 6, 1883. In 1860-1861 he removed to this state and settled on the farm where he died, and was therefore, one of the oldest residents of this place. He was married in Ontario County to Miss Emily Damon,of Livingston County, New York, where her friends still reside. Mr. Bray had seven children, all of whom are still living, his being the first death ever had in the family. For many years, Mr Bray has held the office of Deputy Sheriff and Constable of Otoe County, and was well and widely known. He was a man of the tenderest feelings and kindest of hearts, especially in his family to whom he was greatly endeared. He was never known to turn the stranger from his door, and many a time was greatly recommended himself to accomodate the shelter-less; and in early days of this country, his home was known far and wide as a stopping place for passers by. In 1868 he lost his left arm in a threshing machine and was otherwise greatly injured, since which his health has been feeble and his hold on life precarious. During his last illness which was protracted for several months,he was patient and uncomplaining, dying at last just before the sun set, without a struggle or a sigh. As a man and citizen, he was highly respected for many fine qualities of character, and will long be remembered by the people of this community.
