Allison Coates Halaby, 72, who served as a volunteer and trustee for several environmental and youth-oriented organizations in the Washington area, died of cardiac arrest June 17 at Georgetown University Hospital.

Mrs. Halaby, who split her residence between McLean and Martha's Vineyard, Mass., was a native of Bayville, N.Y.

She attended the American University of Beirut and Columbia University before beginning many years of volunteer service in New York. She served on the advisory councils of Save the Children Federation, the World Wildlife Fund and the Caribbean Conservation Corp.

In 1980, she married Najeeb E. Halaby, former chief executive of Pan Am World Airways and head of the Federal Aviation Administration during the Kennedy administration. She then settled in the Washington area and continued with her volunteer work, serving as trustee of the World Wildlife Fund from 1985 to 1995. She worked with the group to provide books and films on environmental education to schools in underdeveloped countries.

She also was a trustee of Sasha Bruce Youthwork in Washington and a member of the Society of Women Geographers.

Flying enthusiasts, Mrs. Halaby and her husband would pilot their Piper Malibu from Dulles International Airport to cottages in Martha's Vineyard and Colorado.

Her marriage to Henry Clay Frick ended in divorce.

In addition to her husband, survivors include four children from her first marriage, H. Clay Frick III of Anchorage, Adelaide Trafton of Topsham, Maine, Elise Frick of New York and Frances Frick of Portland, Ore.; three stepchildren, Queen Noor Al Hussein of Jordan, Christian Halaby of Palo Alto, Calif., and Alexa Halaby Alagia of Washington; a brother, W. Shelby Coates Jr. of New York; two sisters, Virginia Chafee of Rhode Island and Lee Alsop of New York; and 13 grandchildren.
