US Congressman. During the Civil War, he served as a captain in Company G, 10th Confederate Cavalry and later as adjutant general of Ector's Brigade, Army of Tennessee. After the war, he was admitted to the bar and practiced law in Rusk County, Texas. He was elected justice of the peace in 1869, member of the state constitutional convention in 1875 and elected to the State Senate in 1884. He was elected as a Democrat to the Fiftieth Congress in 1887 and to the three succeeding Congresses, serving until 1895. He was appointed United States judge for the southern district of Indian Territory, Oklahoma by President Cleveland in 1895 and served until his death.
