Helen Margaret Walters was born on September 16, 1931, in Colesburg, the daughter of Isaac “Dale” and Margaret (Bray) Walters. Helen was raised in rural Colesburg and was a graduate of Colesburg High School in 1949.

On November 10, 1949, Helen was united in marriage to Clyde Jennings at St. John’s United Church of Christ in Garber. Two children were born to this union. The couple farmed together on the family farm outside of Garber and then retired to the Gernand Retirement Village in Strawberry Point. Clyde passed away in 2017. Helen then resided at The Meadows in Manchester.

Helen was a longtime member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Garber and also a member of First Congregational Church in Elkader. She was the secretary at Mt. Harmony Cemetery in rural Garber for over 50 years. Helen enjoyed genealogy, visiting with friends and family, cooking and baking, and sharing her creations with friends and family. She was a recipient of the 2012 KCRG 9 Who Care Award and also the Presidential Medal for Philanthropy for her dedicated work with genealogy and working with others.

She died at her daughter’s home in Manchester. Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 67 years, Clyde; two brothers, Darrell and John; one sister, Lois Hill; and her son-in-law, Mike Vorwald.
