Smith served in the Revolutionary War moved to Stratford after the British occupation of Long Island in 1776. George Smith would serve initially under Henry Beekman Livingston, then under Horatio Gates as a Deputy Judge Advocate and his spy chief. A friend of Caleb Brewster, George Smith would eventually join Washington's Culper Spy Ring in 1781 and go by the code name "S. G." He, along with other Culper Spy Ring members, would be early founders of the Society of Cincinnati. He married Lucy Beers and lived in Stratford after settling his fathers' estate in Long Island.
