A funeral for William Jesse Bishop Jr. of McMinnville will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Macy & Son Funeral Directors, McMinnville, with the Rev. Jim Peterson of the Lafayette Community Church and Masonic Lodge 3, AF&AM, McMinnville, officiating. Interment will be in Belcrest Cemetery, Salem.

The funeral home will be open for visitation until 7 o'clock this evening and from noon to 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Mr. Bishop died Aug. 2, 2003, in the Portland Veterans Hospital. He was 71.

He was born July 27, 1932, in Shawnee, Okla., the son of William J. Bishop Sr. and Frances Agnes Hunter Bishop. He moved to Salem with his family in the late 1940s. He attended Salem High School.

He joined the Oregon National Guard in 1949 and transferred to the Army in 1953. During part of his Army career, he was stationed in France.

He and Bernadette Le Bihan were married May 30, 1959, in Poitiers, France.

He moved to El Paso, Texas, in 1961 and was stationed there for six years. He served in Korea in 1965-66 and also served a tour of duty in Vietnam. The couple moved to Germany, living there until 1973, when they moved to Fort Lewis, Wash. Mr. Bishop retired in 1975 after 27 years of military service.

He then moved to Salem, where he earned a degree in industrial engineering from Chemeketa Community College. He worked for Truitt Brothers in Salem for 12 years. He had lived in McMinnville since 1994.

Mr. Bishop had served as a volunteer for the McMinnville Police Department and the Yamhill County Sheriff's Office. He belonged to Masonic Lodge 3, AF&AM, McMinnville; American Legion Post 45 of La Pine and 40/8 Voiture 147 of Central Oregon.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Patrick Bishop-Brown of Shedd and Dennis Bishop of Portland; four sisters, Juanita Heiken and Beverly Flood, both of Salem, Mary-Jane Doan of Roseburg and Betty Moore of Thousand Oaks, Calif.; and two brothers, Ben Bishop of Bend and Milton Bishop of St. George, Utah.

He was preceded in death by two sons, Laurance Bill Bishop and Dominic Bishop.

Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of choice in care of Macy & Son, 135 N.E. Evans St., McMinnville, OR 97128.
