Was born in German seaport village of Emden on November 12, 1782 to Harm Hindrick & Anna Catharine Louisa Elizabeth Constantia (Schuer) Arends.

In German translation, John's name was Johann Friedrick Henry Arends.

John was believed to be the second born child of four children. His siblings were:

Catharine Louisa Barbara (Arends) Brants, b.7-14-1780 in Germany, d.7-24-1808. Married Enno Brants on 5-20-1805. Burial location unknown.

Charles Lewis Arends, b.10-4-1788 in Germany, d. unknown. Burial location unknown. Married Emma Maria Harons on 7-15-1813.

Peter Henry Herman, b.10-24-1790 in Germany, d. unknown. Burial location is unknown. Married Georgina Von Litrerevitz in 1816.

John Arends was married to Lidy Mary Magdalene Metger on 6-17-1812 in Germany (exact location of marriage is unknown). Upon being married, John was 29 years old and Lidy was one day shy of her 28th birthday. The couple was married for about 17 years before Lidy died in 1829. She was only 45 years old when she died. Her cause of death is unknown.

John and Lidy had at least five children, but only three are known to have lived to adulthood . Their known children were:

Henry Herman Arends, b.9-5-1813 in Germany, d.9-26-1814 in Germany. Only lived one year, 21 days. Unknown burial location.

Anna Helena Arends, b.4-26-1815 in Germany, d. Sept., 1833 on a ship in the North Atlantic Sea while emigrating to America with her father, brother and sister. Was only 18 years of age at the time of her death. Buried at sea. Anna never married.

Henry Herman Arends, b.12-4-1817 in Germany, d.11-7-1904 in Topeka, Kansas at age 86. Married Mary Ann Ross (1815-1881) in Missouri in 1841 and had at least two children. Buried in the Topeka Cemetery, Topeka, Shawnee County, Kansas. (See his Find a Grave memorial for more information).

Louisa Constantia (Arends) McCulley-McDonald, b.12-18-1819 in Germany, d.10-10-1875 in Polk County, Missouri. Married Robert "Elliot" McCulley in Polk Co., MO. and had four children. After Elliot's death, she remarried to Robert B. McDonald and had two more children. She died two months short of her 56th birthday and is buried in the Turkey Creek Cemetery in Polk County, Missouri. (For more information, see Find A Grave memorial #114047612).

John Arnold Arends, b.9-15-1822 in Germany, d.12-23-1822 in Germany. Only lived a little over three months. Unknown burial location in Germany.

John had been a widower for nearly four years when he decided to take his three surviving children, Anna, age 18; Henry, age 15; and Louisa, age 13 and go to America for a new life. They left Germany in the late spring of 1833 and began the journey, however, it became tragic when Anna fell sick on the ship during the voyage and died in September. She was only 18 at the time and she had to be buried at sea during the voyage.

The family arrived at New Orleans, Louisiana when they got to America, but once they arrived, they eventually made their way to

northwestern Missouri. After John arrived in America, he changed the German spelling of his name from Johann Friedrick to John Frederick.

John became a farmer in Missouri, and it's believed that he lived the rest of his life there. He learned some English after several years in America but he supposedly never became completely fluent. Henry & Louisa became fluent in English and often helped translate for John, but even so, they always preferred German over English and they always kept a strong German accent.

It is unknown if John ever remarried once he moved to Missouri. There are no records to indicate if he remarried or not, but research is still being done on John. It is still uncertain exactly when John passed away, but he is believed to have died in Livingston or Caldwell County, Missouri around 1861. If that's correct, he would have been around 79 years of age when he died. John's burial location is believed to be in Caldwell County, but the exact location is unknown.

Updated Information:

Further information about John Fredrick Arends was located on Family Search in 2023. The information had been recorded by John's son, Henry Herman Arends in 1847. In the information, Henry indicates that his father, John had the misfortune of losing his hearing in his 12th year of age by a severe spell of the measles, which was tried to be healed by many physicians, but all without effect. John also began to lose his eyesight at a fairly early age. To remedy it, he concluded to come to the United States of America, and he landed with his children at New Orleans in October of 1833. Eventually, John made his way to northwest Missouri, where he spent the remainder of his years. End!
