Ferdinand was the Duke of Parma, Piacenza, and Guastalla from his father's death on July 18, 1765 until he ceded the duchy to France by the Treaty of Aranjuez on March 20, 1801. He was the only son of Philip, Duke of Parma, and Princess Louise Élisabeth of France, a daughter of King Louis XV of France.

His heart is buried here in the ancestral burial place of the Dukes of Parma. His other remains are interred in the Abbazia di San Bernardo di Fontevivo, here.
