Margherita was the daughter of Cosimo II de' Medici, Grand Duke of Tuscany, and his wife, Archduchess Maria Magdalena of Austria. She was married on October 11, 1628 in Florence to Odoardo Farnese, Duke of Parma. Odoardo died on September 11, 1646, and as their eldest son, Ranuccio, was not yet old enough to rule the Duchy alone, his mother, Margherita acted as co-regent with her late husband's brother, Francesco Maria, until he was old enough to govern alone two years later.
