Thomas Calt Handlin, 72, of Eldred, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2012, at his home, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born Oct. 25, 1939, in Greene County, to Thomas E. and Helen (Black) Handlin. He married the former Shirley Evans on Oct. 30, 1960, at Mount Gilead Baptist Church near Carrollton. She survives.
He was a farmer for over 50 years in the Eldred area until shortly before his death. Tommy also owned and operated Handlin Trucking.
He was a member for over 60 years of the Eldred Baptist Church and he belonged to the Stuart Pierson Masonic Lodge in Carrollton. He held the 32nd degree. He also belonged to the Scottish Rite Valley of Springfield.
Tommy is survived by his wife, Shirley, two children, Kimberly A. Handlin Schmidt and Thomas Kelly (Cathy) Handlin and two grandchildren, Nicole (David) Wolfley and Randy Handlin, all of Eldred. A brother, Larry Handlin of Eldred; two sisters, Karen (Chuck) Smith of Godfrey and Janet (Dave) Ward of Hillsboro; an aunt, Mary Whitlock of Jerseyville; and several nieces and nephews also survive.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Tuesday at Airsman-Hires Funeral Home in Carrollton. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. at the funeral home, with burial to follow at Eldred Memorial Gardens Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Eldred Baptist Church, the Stuart E. Pierson Masonic Lodge, Blessing Hospice or Boyd Memorial Hospital.
