The world, I know, has lost the warmest, kindest and most generous man when my much loved husband James (Jim) Elmer passed away at his home in Plymouth, NC, formerly of Victory NY, on Tuesday, March 31, 2020.
Jim was a loving husband to me, his wife of 48 years, Sally Elmer of the home and the proud father of his two sons, James Jr of Red Creek, NY and David of Auburn, NY and his daughter Michele(Roger) Shurtleff and four grandchildren Breanne, Hailey, Karmen and Trevor Shurtleff all of Cato NY. He also leaves a sister Beverly (Robert) Kreiger of Cato, NY and a brother Robert Elmer, of Red Creek NY as well as several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Hugh and Doris Elmer.
Jim worked as a machinist for 20 years, then ventured out with his own on-site farm butchering and meat processing service in NY where he catered parties and was very well known for his BBQ chicken. He also owned a Christmas tree farm. Jim loved the outdoors where he was an avid hunter and spent many hours out on his boat fishing. He was proud to be active within his community in NY; a lifelong member of the Victory volunteer fire dept, Victory grange, Victory Methodist church, The Lions club and VFW. He was a proud veteran who had served his country in the US Army during the Vietnam War. He was also the proud owner of a 1966 Chevelle, of which he lovingly restored and took to many local shows winning multiple awards and trophies. Upon their retirement, he & Sally moved to NC becoming active members of the Plymouth United Methodist church and where he continued to enjoy hunting and fishing.
A celebration of life services, with military honors, will be held at a later date, once all states mandates have been removed. Burial will be in Victory Cemetery in NY.
