Rob Waibel is a lumberjack and he is a lot more than OK.
In fact, he is great.
The West Linn resident was inducted into the inaugural class of the Lumberjack Hall of Fame, and when it comes to all-around lumberjacking skills, Waibel is unquestionably the best. He has won the Iron Jack championship an incredible nine times in his career. The Iron Jack is sort a combination of a decathlon and marathon, consisting of 10 events. That's a lot of chopping, sawing and leaping around.

Rob Waibel would cry tears of joy over an amazing cup of coffee, a sappy commercial, or the song "Romeo & Juliet" by Dire Straits. He would leave chewed gum all over; for later, of course, no sense wasting good gum.
He was raised in Sweet Home, Oregon by the Rhinestone Logger Bob Waibel, and by Mona Waibel, both of whom preceded him in death.
He graduated from Sweet Home High School, and he attended Willamette University, where he joined the Beta Theta Pi fraternity. He finished college at the University of Oregon with a degree in Political Science. He later earned his master's degree in education at George Fox University.
Rob married his college sweetheart. They lived together in West Linn, Oregon and raised two children. Rob loved Jesus, his neighborhood dudes, his yoga buddies at the West Linn Senior Center, his lumberjack family and adventuring!
Rob was a forestry and natural resources teacher at the Sabin-Shellenberg Center in Clackamas, where "He inspired, taught, laughed, and shared his passion for life and learning with everyone he met"
He was a competitive lumberjack athlete, and he made a huge impact in the American Lumberjack Association. Aside from his 50+ all-around titles, including Superjack and Ironjack medals, he also was a Stihl Timbersports finalist many times. Rob promoted his sport by running lumberjack shows in Estacada, Brownsville and West Linn. He was generally considered the best all-around lumberjack of his time.
Rob believed in giving back. He loved flipping burgers with the West Linn Lions Club. He celebrated a state championship for the West Linn Lady Lions lacrosse team in 2013 as one of the volunteer coaches. And, Rob delivered for Meals on Wheels and served on the West Linn Parks Board.
He is survived by his wife of 33 years; by his two children; by his sister and brother-in-law; and by his nephew and his niece.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Rob's name to Friends of Trees. A party and memorial tree planting will be held "when the sun is shining" at Hopkins Demonstration Forest, 16750 S Brockway Rd, Oregon City, OR. Date and time to be announced later.
