17-year-old dies in wreck between motorcycle and Mack truck

A traffic accident near Ripley involving a motorcycle and a Mack truck has left one person dead and one injured, Jackson County dispatchers said.
The accident happened about 2:10 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of Haws Run and Gay Run. There were two men riding on the same motorcycle that hit the truck.

Shannon James Carpenter, a 17-year-old man from Kenna, was killed during the accident, Jackson County Chief Deputy Bruce Dewees said.

The passenger, Asa Bess, also 17, from Gay was taken to Charleston Area Medical Center's General Hospital where he is listed in satisfactory condition.

The driver of the Mack truck, Charles Jason Cameron, was not injured in the accident.

Investigation of the incident is still underway.

Shannon James Carpenter, 17, of Kenna, passed away Thursday, August 9, 2007, from injuries received in a motorcycle accident.

He was born March 13, 1990, at Teays Valley, a son of Randy Glenn and Alice Kathleen Morrison Carpenter of Kenna. He was a former employee of Burger King at Fairplain and a member of the Gateway Church of Christ in St. Albans.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by a brother, Andrew Blake Carpenter; grandparents, Charles and Barbara Morrison of Kenna and Martha June Eastes of North Carolina; great-grandparents, Dempsey Morrison and his wife Shirley and Virgie Dawson. He is also survived by uncles, Charles Matheny Morrison and Brian Keith Morrison; niece, Kirstin McKenzie Carpenter; and nephews, Austin James Wilson and Beau Daniel Thaxton.

He was preceded in death by a grandfather, Ernest James Carpenter; a great-grandmother, Hattie Morrison; and uncles, Paul Micah Morrison and Joey Lee Morrison.

The funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday evening at Parson-Waybright Funeral Home, Ripley, with Pastors David Stauffer and Steve Harley officiating. Burial will follow in the Parsons Cemetery, Kenna.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Parsons-Waybright Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Asa Bess Fund, in care of City National Bank, Ripley, WV.
