Albert G. Lennon Jr. passed away at his home in Melrose, surrounded by his family, on Monday, June 1, 2009. He was 60 years of age. Mr. Lennon was born and raised in Arlington and graduated from North Cambridge Catholic High School. He entered the US Army in 1968 and served during the Vietnam War. He moved to Melrose in 1971 and has been a resident for 38 years. Al worked as a truck driver for UPS for 32 years, retiring in 2001. He was first and foremost a dedicated husband, father, grandfather and brother. He worked as a volunteer firefighter in Arlington for several years and continued to be a "sparky" throughout his life. Al volunteered as an umpired & treasurer at the Incarnation Baseball League for several years, he umpired at the local little leagues and for the Babe Ruth Baseball League. Mr. Lennon also refereed basketball for high school freshman & JV teams, for Melrose boys & girls' basketball and the YMCA basketball leagues. Al was a member of the VFW Harold O'Young Post # 2394 in Melrose, Most Blessed Sacrament Church in Wakefield and was a former member of the Melrose Elks. Mr. Lennon enjoyed traveling with his wife Nancy and the history of WWII. Al was the beloved husband of Nancy (Fichera) Lennon. Devoted father of Kate Lennon Walker & her husband Jeff of Haverhill, Andy Lennon & his wife Keri of Charlotte, NC and Matt Lennon & his wife Alison of Matthews, NC. Loving grandfather of Benjamin, Sean, Natalie & Jason. Caring brother of Most Reverend Richard G. Lennon, Bishop of The Diocese of Cleveland, OH. Funeral from the Gately Funeral Home, 79 W. Foster St. Melrose, on Saturday, June 6th at 9:00AM. Funeral Mass in The Most Blessed Sacrament Church, 1155 Main St. Wakefield, at 10AM. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited. Visiting hours Friday 3-8PM. Interment in Wyoming Cemetery Melrose. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Yawkey Center @ Mass.
