Joe Albert "Joe Red" McDonald, Sr. was born on May 30, 1941 to Jessie E. Washington and Reuben McDonald in Travis County.

He attended Blackshear Elementary, Kealing Jr. High schools and graduated from L. C. Anderson High School - Yellow Jackets class of 1961, and was a Rosewood Recreation Center and Doris Miller Auditorium regular.

Joe served his country in the United States Navy then went to work for the City of Austin for thirty-three years. He was a giving and caring gentle giant and that was from being raised by his grandmother, Annie (Big) Gooden Washington.

He professed a hope in Christ at an early age at Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church and he read the bible every day.

Proceeding him in death are his loving, carrying, and nurturing grandmother, Annie Mae Gooden Washington, his parents, Reuben McDonald and Jessie Washington Woods, his step-mother, Mattie C. McDonald, his wife, Billie Jean Wilson McDonald, and his brother Arthur L. Woods.

Left to cherish his loving memory are his son, Joe A McDonald, Jr., step-son, Donnie J. Walker, Sr., sister, Carolyn McDonald Fitzgerald of Arizona, brother, Ruben McDonald of Houston; four grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
