Joe was a member of the Southside Church of Christ and was also a member of the White River Kiwanis. He was a 1954 graduate of Mississippi County High School then went on to graduate from Arkansas State University in 1963. Joe then went to the Eastern New Mexico University and graduated from there in 1965. After his education was complete, he taught school in Deering, Missouri, Manila, Arkansas and Portales, New Mexico. He was also a teacher and administrator with the Blytheville, Arkansas public schools for 22 years. In 1990, he retired to Batesville where he worked for Citizens Bank and also as a case worker for North Arkansas Human Services.
Joe is survived by his wife, Joann (Jones) Norton of Shreveport; one son, John Arden Norton also of Shreveport; two sisters: Linda Wright of Little Rock, Arkansas and Polly House of Nashville, Tennessee; and one granddaughter, Regan Ashley Norton of Collierville, Tennessee. Other survivors include two nephews: Tyler House and Travis House both of Nashville.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents, Frank and Estella Ray.
Graveside services are at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 11, 2007 at Roselawn Memorial Gardens under the direction of Roller-Crouch Funeral Home of Batesville.
There is no visitation planned.
