Formerly of the Standing Rock Nation, Willard was the son of Esther Malebear and step-father Vincent Thundershield. He attended Standing Rock Community High School, and joined the Army after graduation. After serving in Vietnam, he attended Standing Rock College, and then University of Minnesota. He went on to teach Lakota history and language at Four Winds High School in Minneapolis.
