HRH Princess Louise Victoria Alexandra Dagmar of Wales was the daughter of the Prince and Princess of Wales, later King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Her paternal grandparents were Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, the Prince Consort. Her maternal grandparents were King Christian IX of Denmark and Louise of Hesse-Kassel. Princess Louise was married on July 27, 1889 to Alexander Duff, 1st Duke of Fife, at the Private Chapel in Buckingham Palace.

King Edward VII created Princess Louise the Princess Royal on November 9, 1905, the highest honor bestowed on a female member of the royal family. At the same time, the King declared that the two daughters of the Princess Royal would be styled as princesses, with precedence immediately after all members of the royal family bearing the style of "Royal Highness".

The Princess Royal died on January 4, 1931, and her remains were temporarily placed in the royal vault, St. George's Chapel, Windsor Castle. Her remains were transferred to the Private Chapel, Mar Lodge, Braemar, Aberdeenshire on May 21, 1931.
