Gerald was a graduate of the Historic William Bryant High School. After graduating he attended Albany State College and graduated with a B.A. of Sociology. He also attained a Masters Degree in Education from Georgia State University and a Specialist Degree in Educational Leadership from Troy State University. Gerald retired after 36 years of service in education in Colquitt County and surrounding Southwest Georgia School Systems.
Mr. Burke was a member of Mother Easter Baptist Church where he served on the Deacon Board. He was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. In his spare time Gerald enjoyed football, baseball, basketball, traveling and spending time with family. He especially enjoyed barbequing.
He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Burke; two brothers, Harold Burke and Frank B. Burke.
He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife of 42 years, Bernice Bussey Burke of Albany, Georgia; mother, Maude Burke; two daughters,
Dewanna Burke of Chamblee, Georgia, Devin Sanders (Kareem) of Fairfield, Ohio; two brothers, Kenneth Burke (Betty), Ronald Burke (Wylean) both of Albany, Georgia; one sister, Patricia Dunn of Duluth, Georgia; four grandchildren, Kameron Sanders, Kylie Sanders, Kyson Sanders all of Fairfield, Ohio and Sarah Burke-Offokansi of Chamblee, Georgia and a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins, fraternity brothers, mentees and close friends.
