Benjamin Earl Thomas, Sr. (Age 97)

Entered into eternal rest on Friday, March 27, 2020. A District of Columbia resident for over 80 years, was affectionately known as “The Mayor” due to his years-long service as a neighborhood and community activist. He served as President of the Benning Ridge Civic Association, Vice-Chair of the Far Southeast Council and Chair of the Sixth District Citizen Advisory Council. He also served as elected Delegate to the 1980 White House Conference on Aging and Families and is best known for his 18-year tenure as an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner on Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC)7E.

Mr. Thomas is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Odessa R. Thomas, sisters Gloria Jean Winn (David) and Margaret Johnson, daughter Jacquelyn Dance, sons Benjamin Earl Thomas, Jr.(Viola), Wayne K. Thomas (Shirley), and Brian J. Thomas (Michelle). He is also survived by grandchildren Bennita Rollerson, Tyrita Thomas, Lawanne Craig, Crystal Holt, Lawrence Dance, III (Laura), Derrick Dance, Jamaal Thomas (Heidi), and Payton Thomas (Jamie), numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren and a host of loving relatives and friends.

“The Mayor” will be missed by many. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Interment at Fort Lincoln Cemetery.
