Roger Ernest Burns, age 79, passed away peacefully after a long illness on Thursday, March 26, 2020 at his home in Davenport, Florida.
He was born Nov. 2, 1940 in Morrisville, VT to the son of Ernest and Irene Burns. He grew up primarily in Hyde Park, Vermont. After school he joined the Army and served his country for 6 years, something for which he was always proud. He married his wife, Jacqueline Jones, in 1966 and settled in Johnson for 14 years before moving to Hyde Park raising three sons.
A mechanic by trade, he worked at various places for 25 years. He enjoyed working with his hands and was always finding (or creating) odd jobs to keep himself busy. He was also always ready to lend a hand or give advice on various projects – especially for his sons.
He lived for connecting with others and sharing a story and a laugh (or a drink). During retirement, he and his wife led a fulfilling life of being "snow birds" splitting their time between Florida and Vermont for 20 years before ultimately moving to Florida fulltime. While staying at campgrounds during the summer months, they made a lot of new friends. They stayed in close contact with many of those friends to this day. In Florida, he was still very social meeting many new friends in their development; especially the ones who liked to have the occasional drink of Crown Royal.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years Jacqueline, three sons, Robert and wife Connie of Clarksville, TN, Steven and wife Pamela of Essex Junction, VT and Thomas of Newport Center, VT, three granddaughters, Kristen, Katelyn and Madison. He is also survived by and four brothers, Raymond and wife Sharon of Johnson, VT, Ralph and wife JoAnn of Hyde Park, VT, Rodney and wife Bonnie of Hyde Park, VT, and Ronald and wife Heather of Milton, VT. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at a later date at the Vermont Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Randolph, VT where his ashes will be buried to a 21-gun salute.
