Dorothy Louise (Appleby) Turner passed away peacefully in her sleep, of natural causes, at 1:45 am, August 14, 2017 in Elko, Nevada. She was 92.
Dorothy was born in Springfield, Missouri to Jarve and Verna (Breese) Appleby on August 21, 1924. While serving in WWI, her father’s lungs were damaged by mustard gas. So, at an early age her father moved the family to the drier climate of Phoenix and Harquahala Valley, Arizona. When her father passed in 1938, her mother and Dorothy moved to Long Beach, California to be nearer family. With the outbreak of WWII, Dorothy went to live with family in Fresno, California. There she met Barney Turner, her future husband of 70 years. Dorothy and Barney were married on December 2, 1944 at the base chapel. Their first son, Michael, was born in 1945. At the end of the war, the family lived in Long Beach, California. After the birth of their second son, Daniel, in 1953, Dorothy and Barney moved their family to Phoenix, Arizona, where Barney took an electrical engineering position at AirResearch Manufacturing Company. In Phoenix, Dorothy raised her family and did volunteer work as the secretary at Biltmore Bible Church. She enjoyed her family life, reading, and began to take an active interest in her family’s heritage.
Dorothy eventually wrote several books on the Appleby and Breese family histories. She also created and maintained the Appleby Heritage Association website (http:/appleby.rootsweb.ancestry.com). When her husband retired, they traveled extensively around the US in their motorhome. They eventually settled in Elko, Nevada, to live near their youngest son and his family. Dorothy’s husband, Barney, passed away in 2015. She missed him deeply and never fully recovered from her loss. Dorothy’s last words were ‘Barney, Barney’.
