Gary grew up on a farm near Laurel, Nebraska. He served in the US Army in Korea. He married Sally Sue Smith of Laurel. They continued to live in Laurel, where Gary had his own construction firm. He built a number of the homes in Laurel and nearby. On Wednesday, April 1, 2020 he had a heart attach, was rushed to the hospital in Wayne, Nebraska, and then on to a hospital in Sioux City, Iowa where he was pronounced dead. He is survived by his wife and his children.

The Newton family moved from Bloomfield to Laurel, Nebraska in 1965, where Gary was graduated from the Laurel High School. He married Sally Sue Smith at the United Presbyterian Church in Laurel on September 1, 1967. Sally was the daughter of Francis and Shirley Smith of Laurel.

Gary joined the Air National Guard and was sent to Vietnam where he served in the war there in the years 1968 and 1969. He retired at age 70. He was a member of the Laurel Cemetery Board, where he now rests in peace.

Gary left to remember him, his wife Sally, and their three daughters: Angie (Mrs. Scott) Rath of Laurel, Amy (Mrs. Phil Nicolas) of Spincer, Minnesota, and Katie (Mrs. Ryan Kvols) of Laurel. And his faithful companion, his dog Beth.
