The Newton family moved from Bloomfield to Laurel, Nebraska in 1965, where Gary was graduated from the Laurel High School. He married Sally Sue Smith at the United Presbyterian Church in Laurel on September 1, 1967. Sally was the daughter of Francis and Shirley Smith of Laurel.
Gary joined the Air National Guard and was sent to Vietnam where he served in the war there in the years 1968 and 1969. He retired at age 70. He was a member of the Laurel Cemetery Board, where he now rests in peace.
Gary left to remember him, his wife Sally, and their three daughters: Angie (Mrs. Scott) Rath of Laurel, Amy (Mrs. Phil Nicolas) of Spincer, Minnesota, and Katie (Mrs. Ryan Kvols) of Laurel. And his faithful companion, his dog Beth.
