Anne Mary Teresa Fitzalan-Howard, Duchess of Norfolk, CBE, was the eldest daughter of Gerald Joseph Constable Maxwell and his wife, the former Carolyn Carden. She was married July 4, 1949, to Hon. Miles Fitzalan-Howard, the eldest son of Bernard Fitzalan Howard, 3rd Baron Howard of Glossop, and his wife, Mona, 11th Baroness Beaumont, a peeress in her own right. In 1971, her husband inherited the Barony of Beaumont from his mother in 1971; his father's barony in 1972; and in 1975 her husband inherited the dukedom of Norfolk from his cousin, the 16th Duke of Norfolk. The Duchess was a well-known humanitarian and was a member of the Soldiers', Sailors' and Airmen's Families Association, holding the position of President, West Sussex Branch, from 1977 to 2002, and on the national level was a Vice-President of Council from 1981 to 1996.
