Presidential Cabinet Secretary. Served under President Jimmy Carter as the 12th secretary of the Air Force from April 6, 1977, to May 18, 1979. Born in Chicago in 1920, he received a bachelor of science degree in aeronautical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1943 and later attended Northwestern University Business School in Chicago. A structural engineer with Douglas Aircraft Company during WWII, he was commissioned in the United States Navy and served as a communications officer until the end of the war. Then was employed in the Chicago area in various engineering and project management positions until joining Booz Allen Hamilton in 1951 and rose to become a partner with responsibilities for a number of assignments with large aircraft manufacturers building new military and commercial aircraft. Later responsible for the firm's consulting work for major oil companies in Iran and the Kuwait. From 1963 to 1970, he was president of the publishing division of the Houston Post Company. After his government service became director of the Computer and Business Equipment Manufacturer's Association and a member of the Conference Board. Was also a member of the advisory boards of Wellesley College and Northwestern University, and was a director of the Boys Club of America and a trustee of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. Died in Lake Forest, Illinois.
