James married Nancy Griffey on August 1, 1844 in Madison County, Kentucky. The couple were the parents of a son, James E. Church. Their family moved to Garrard County, prior to 1860, and James made his living by farming his own land.

When the Civil War broke out, Mr. Church volunteered to join the Union Army and was enlisted as a Pvt. in Co H, 7th Ky. Vol. Cav., Union. He was mustered in on August 16, 1862 and served with his Co/Regiment until the end of the war. He was mustered out on July 10, 1865 in Edgefield, Tennessee. James returned to Garrard County and was reunited with his wife and son.

He applied for a military disability pension on October 8, 1889. James was not enumerated in the 1890 Veterans Schedules, nor was Nancy enumerated as his widow. Mr. Church's military headstone was ordered on November 30, 1894, but these headstones were, sometimes, ordered years after the soldier's death. No military widow's pension claim was ever filed. No death records exist for this couple, nor have obituaries been found.

Based upon circumstantial evidence, it appears that Nancy passed away between 1880, when she was enumerated in the census of Garrard County and before 1890. James probably passed away between 1889, when he filed his pension claim, and prior to the date of the 1890 Veterans Schedule.
