When James came of age, his father gave him 80 acres of land. James was to be a farmer all of his live. James moved to Indiana and then to Illinois. He lived in Clay County for 27 years before his death. He was to marry and become a widower four times. James was the father of nine sons and six daughters. He died on August 1, 1879, having lived 81 years.
