A native of Wilmore, Kentucky, he was a retired security supervisor for the Federal Reserve Bank, a barber, and a member of Cedar Top Baptist Church, Wilmore.
He is survived by his three sons, James A. Jr. (Linda), Keith D., and Anthony M. (Martha) Knox; a daughter, Kim Bonnet (Kevin); along with three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A private burial will take place at Camp Nelson National Cemetery, Nicholasville, Ky.
