Barbara Jelene (Dixon) Hurst was born on May 28, 1934 on her grandparents’ farm in Allen, Oklahoma, to Raymond George and Jelene Cleone Olivo Dixon.

Barbara married Max Murray Hurst on January 25, 1951. They have lived in Frederick since that time. Education was an important part of Barbara’s life. She graduated from Frederick High School in 1952. In 1971 she received a Bachelor’s Degree in History from Cameron University. She continued her education at the University of Oklahoma and completed a Master’s Degree in Guidance and Counseling in 1978. She was a Licensed Professional Counselor. Barbara had
a passion for working with young people and treasured her years as a Psychology, World History and English teacher at Frederick High School. She also greatly enjoyed serving as the K-3 Elementary Counselor for several years.

Barbara’s church was also very important to her. She became a member of First Baptist Church in Frederick in 1951 after being saved at a Billy Graham Crusade. She was involved in many activities of the church through the years such as Youth Sunday School Director and an officer in Women’s Missionary Union. In 1994 she helped establish a Video and Library Ministry.

Family time was Barbara’s joy in life. Her family includes her loving husband Max, and her children Debra Jelene Hagy and husband Mike of Edmond, Oklahoma, and son Danny Max Hurst and wife Paula of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Her grandchildren include Dr. Heath Hagy and wife Erin of Arlington, Tennessee; Holt Hagy and wife Jenna of Edmond, Oklahoma; April Roberts and husband Jason of Clovis, New Mexico; and Dakota Sherrill of Greenville, South Carolina. Her great grandchildren include Max McCann Hagy of Arlington, Tennessee; Verity Jane Roberts and Leighton Joy Roberts of Clovis, New Mexico. Very special extended family members include a sister-in-law, Judy Dixon and three nephews: Greg Dixon, Doug Dixon, and Matt Dixon and their families.

Barbara was preceded in death by her brother, Michael Ray Dixon, and her parents.
